Description
This fantastic purse was an amazing find by Australian celluloid purse collectors Mike and Lizzie. I’ll begin with the frame. The artist who created the piece was probably basing the design off a depiction of Horus in the tomb of Seti I. Seti’s tomb boasts some of the most amazing tomb paintings in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. Seti’s tomb was documented by scholars in the 1800s. Niccolo Rosellini’s “Monuments of Egypt and Nubia” (1832-1844) has a number of illustrations of the tomb including one that depicts Horus in profile like this purse. In addition, the position of the bird and the attempt to make it look like a carving on a wall, strongly suggest the purse’s designer saw this book or some other representation of Seti’s tomb. The front celluloid frame conceals a mirror on the reverse side. A wonderfully beaded Egyptian-themed bag complete this spectacular purse.
