Hippocampi

Description
This celluloid purse features two hippocampi. Phoenician, Estrucan and Greek mythology and art all feature hippocampi. They are often shown drawing the chariot of Poseidon (Neptune). The hippocampus is also used in Renaissance heraldry. In archaeology the most famous depiction of a hippocampus is the brooch found as part of the Lydia Hoard (also know as the Karun Treasure). The hoard was the focus of a recent international legal battle over looted art. It made news again when it was stolen for a second time. The other famous hippocami are those featured in the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Like the Lydian Hoard brooch and Trevi fountain, these hippocampi have wings. This is another great piece from Australian celluloid purse collectors Mike and Lizzie.
